Online Activities

Can't make it to meetings?

Try one of these options:


Attend a Meeting - Virtually

  • View the meeting agenda and minutes (available on Pipeline and here on the blog) and listen to the podcast of the meeting. Blog here, on facebook, or on our Pipeline Discussion Board about the meeting.

Participate in a "Scholarship" hallmark activity ONLINE:
  • Book/Movie Club - Read one of the Books we are all reading or watch one of the movies we are watching. Read/View and blog here or discuss on our Pipeline Discussion Board.
  • Satellite Seminars - Go to our Pipeline Group for instructions on how to view the satellite seminars. They will only be available online until January 15 (then we will have them on DVD on campus and will have them available at the Library in El Dorado and Andover.
  • Become a mentor - Get involved in the mentoring program at Coleman Middle School (or at your local school whereever you live - Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Scouting, 4H groups always need help (or coach a kids soccer, football, basketball, or baseball team.) There are lots of great mentoring opportunties. If you have ideas for this or are helping with one of these things please blog about it and share your experiences.
  • Becomes a tutor - Volunteer for Peer Tutoring once a week (you can also get paid for this.)

    If you are doing anyof these type of scholarship programs, email ptk@butlercc.edu before the end of the semester and tell us how many hours you have participate in these activities throughout 2008. We would like to honor the students in our "Member of the Month" program for doing the most Scholarship activities.
Participate in a Leadership Hallmark Activity :
  • Take the Leadership Development Studies Class online.
  • Participate in the Leadership Challenge program (attending 4 leadership summits offered this year.) These are on campus, but not during our regular member meeting - so try to make it to at least one of these programs. They are free!
  • Step up as a leader on campus, in your community, regionally, or nationally.
Tell us what Leadership positions or activities you are doing by the end of the semester.

Participate in a Service Hallmark Activity:
  • Help pick up cans (in the Habitat for Humanity boxes) around campus (this can be done on your own schedule. Just contact ptk@butlercc.edu to let us know that you are doing this so we can tell you what to do with the cans. The money from this project goes to Habitat For Humanity of Butler County.
  • Help beautify or work on a Litter clean up program (like Adopt a Highway) in your community. Contact Keep America Beautiful at http://www.kab.org for more information about activities in your commmunity.
  • Participate in Relay For Life or other fundraisers for the American Cancer Society (or other worthy causes). Phi Theta Kappa (the whole international society) has a goal of raising $10 million for the American Cancer Society by 2018 (our 100th anniversary of being an Organization). We jhave raised about $2.3 million so far (our chapter has helped Butler Students raise over $75,000 since 2006!)
Participate in a Fellowship Hallmark Activity:
  • Participate in our Facebook site and/or this blog. Tell us what you are doing in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. Get to know your fellow members.
  • Set up times to get together with Phi Theta Kappans in your area.
I hope this has given you some food for thought! There are many ways to get invovled, even if you live in Council Grove, Kansas - Houston, Texas - Baton Rouge, Louisiana - or Paris, France. I would like to honor the active members who live the farthest away from El Dorado, Kansas. Email me at ptk@butlercc.edu if you are actively participating in these activities as a member of our chapter. I will award a $25 in Recognitions items for the most active member who lives the farthest away and participates in one of these online activities listed above. This will be announced at our member meeting in January, so participate and get your activity list to me by December 31, 2008.

PHI THETA KAPPA WEEK November 16-22


We are celebrating Phi Theta Kappa Week! Phi Theta Kappa week celebrates our Founder's Day which is November 19. This is our 90th year. How can YOU celebrate Phi Theta Kappa Week?

  1. Collect canned/non-perishable food items (bring them to the meeting on November 20 or to Susan Forrest's Office, or to one of the collection boxes in Andover and El Dorado.)
  2. Help raise money for Compassion International by getting pledges based on the number of canned goods that we collect.
  3. Watch one of the Satellite Seminars online and blog about it!
  4. Attend our International Dinner (including dishes from all over the world with facts about affluence in those countries and a great speaker who will address our Honors Study Topic: The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences.)
  5. Watch/Read the book for our Movie/Book Club! This month is "The Freedom Writers". The Last book/video we did was "The Overspent American".
  6. Participate in the Grizzly Adventures Challenge Course - Friday, November 21 from 1-4pm. (Meet at the Grizzly Adventures Challenge Course - near the 1200 building (or Small Gym - 500 building - if inclement weather.) Contact Bo Tucker at btuckmusic@yahoo.com to sign up.

Advisor's Corner - November 2008

Dear Phi Theta Kappans,

We have had a very busy, but awesome semester! I am so proud of each and every one of you for all you are doing to keep up your grades in your classes while balancing your work and family with Phi Theta Kappa.

We want to welcome all of our new members and two new officers - Geri Noll and Luis Carbal!

Since I have taken on an extra class this semester, I have been unable to attend the meetings, but your awesome officer team has been able to lead those meetings and have great speakers and activities in my absence. This is exactly as it should be. As advisor, I am now advising this officer team, not running the officer team. This is a huge feat, for me to give up the control of the chapter, (just ask any of the previous officer teams.) If you get a chance, email one of the officer team that you have worked with and show your appreciation for all the hours that they work on your behalf.

Scholarships
As we finish up this semester, many of you are asking about Scholarship Recommendations, etc.... since many of the deadlines for scholarships are approaching. Some of you are graduating! We would like everyone to take part in activities with the chapter or related to our four hallmarks, Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. There are two member meetings left, Global Food Crisis - Food/Pledge Drive, Betterworld Book Drive, Habitat for Humanity aluminum can collection - ongoing projects that need your help. If you can volunteer (you tell me when you are available, that would be very helpful.

Also Scholarship Activities such as the International Dinner at our member meeting on November 20 (next week from 5-7pm - which will be in the new Student Union in the 5000 building), Movie/Book Club (online or offline - watch and/or read the book - discuss online on our blog), and tutoring/mentoring that have been going on.

You will want to have a couple of these activities on your scholarship applications. So, pick one that you can do and contact us at ptk@butlercc.edu. We would like everyone to do at least one event before the end of the semester. Take time during the Thanksgiving break and watch a movie or download the Satellite Seminar (webcast it) online! Join in on the discussion!

This information will allow me to get the information out in a timely fashion and will help me write the best recommendation letter possible.

T-shirts
We have sent in an order for the t-shirts for this year. See the attached picture to get an idea of what they will look like. For Small - Extra Large they are $9.50 per shirt and for 2XL-5XL they are $12.50. The price went up $1.50 in order to make the Lime Green lettering show up on the black background (we had to do 2 colors - white and lime green). We hope you like it! All new members this semester will receive their shirt for free, but we do not have all the sizes for new member t-shirts. If you are not a new member this semester, you can order a t-shirt (for the above prices) by November 20 and we will hope to get those shirts ordered and to you by the December 4 meeting. Place your orders by emailing, but get your money (by check) to us by the November 20 meeting.

Member of the Month
We are seeking nominations for the Member of the Month. If you have participated in events during late September or October (Susan G. Komen - Race for the Cure, Leadership Conference, Blood Drive, Satellite Seminars, Helped with Cans, Helped with New Member Induction or Orientation, attended meetings) please email me with your list of activities. The form is attached. Just email it back to me. If you did projects not included in the list - add those hours and a reflection of your project or other activity. We need those lists by November 19 in order to announce the winner by November 20.

If you have not received a chapter handbook, please contact Susan Forrest. We have several copies and would be happy to mail them to you if you are unable to make it to a meeting.

Also, we are searching for a second Chapter Advisor. They need to be a faculty (could be adjunct or full time) member and preferably in Andover (but not a requirement. This person should be interested in Scholarship, Leadership, and Service and willing to attend various activtivies and conferences (regional/international). If you have a great instructor that you would like to suggest/nominate, please email me before Thanksgiving.

Member Meeting September 25th, 2008
6:00 p.m. Butler Community College of Andover

I.President Ashley Kim called the meeting to order at 6:04 PM
II.Officer Reports

A.Ashley Kim- President – Ashley has been organizing things for the meeting, as well preparing to participate in the Susan G. Komen race for the cure. She has also been working on the new member orientation and induction.

Additionally, Ashley mentioned that there are currently two open officer positions. Anyone who is interested in more information on these positions should contact her for more information.

Lastly, she mentioned her participation in the recent phone-a-thon.

B.Bo Tucker- Leadership – Bo mentioned that Grizzly Adventures and adopt a highway will be taking place on Oct. 25th. Lunch will be provided for those who are participating.

C.Becci Higgs- Correspondence – She has been working hard to get the minutes edited and posted to the group.

D.Jenni Alonso- Public Relations – She has been working on getting a blog put together for the newsletter, as well as for all of our Phi Theta Kappa pictures.

E.Sarah Kirkwood- Treasurer – Sarah is a new officer, so she briefly introduced herself to us. She let us know that she is currently a sophomore from Augusta, and that she is an accounting major. She also participated in the recent leadership summit.

Additionally, she let us know that there is currently $711.29 in the treasury, and that she has been going over the budget.

Sarah also mentioned needing assistance with coming up with ideas for fundraisers. If you have any ideas that you’d like to share please email us at ptk@butlercc.edu. However, just because you give us an idea for an event… that does not mean that you have to head the fundraiser up if you don’t wish to.

F.Laura Houser- Scholarship – Laura passed out a scholarship activities sheet, as well as a yellow sheet that mentioned tutoring. There is contact information on both sheets if you are interested in assisting with tutoring.

She also discussed the international dinner, which will be held Nov. 22nd at 5 PM. A signup sheet was passed around for people to commit to bringing a dish from a specific country for the dinner, as well as to help out in other ways at the event. Currently Laura is still looking for a speaker for the event.

The book and movie club is still looking for participants. If you’d like to join in on the fun please contact Laura for more information.

III.Old Business

A.Fall Kick-Off Party – This year we had the highest number to ever attend the first meeting of the year!

Orange sheets were passed around for everyone to write down what they liked and what they would change about the event. The following replies were received:
Ken Poole – He wrote that next year he would have the event in the park again.
Kristi Gildner – She wrote that she really enjoyed meeting new people, as well as the mixers. However, next year she’d like to see it take place somewhere that is easier to find.

Christy Bush – She would like to have a little more notice of the event, as well as more information about it.

Hayley Powers – Hayley enjoyed the games to help to get to know everyone’s names, as well as the fact that family was welcome. However, next year she’d like better directions and more definite officer plans.

Ashley Kim – Ashley enjoyed the attendance and mixing with our sister chapter. She would like for us to be more specific on the location next year, and to see us provide better directions.

Susan – She enjoyed the number of people that attended compared to last year, meeting new people, the icebreakers, mixing with our sister chapter, and the fellowship. Next year she’d like to see better directions, more structure, and more people to help cook.

Jenni Alonso – Jenni enjoyed the food, games, and the attendance. Next year she’d just like to see even better attendance.

Laura Houser – She also enjoyed the food, games, and involvement from everyone. She’d like to see things more organized next year, as well as more time for an actual meeting.

B.Phone-A-Thon – The phone-a-thon was held this past Saturday from 10-3 PM. Almost all of the officer team, as well as a few members, came to the event. A total of 385 people were called, but there are still some that need to be contacted. If you’re willing to help with calling the remaining people please contact Ashley for the list.

IV.New Business

A.Regional Leadership Conference- Susan Forrest
September 26-27th
Laura and Sonia Houser will be attending the event with Susan.

B.Susan G Komen Race for the Cure- Ashley Kim
September 27th 6-11 AM
Please come and help to facilitate the race if you can. This counts as a service project.

A pink sheet was passed around for people to signup if they are able to come help with the event.

C.Blood Drive- Susan Forrest
September 29th 8-4:30 PM (10 AM – 3:30 PM actual drive)
The time slot of 2-3:30 PM is open for donating blood still. A signup sheet was passed around for anyone who was interested in participating.

1.If you want to volunteer you can also signup on the orange sheet that was passed around. People are needed to help check in, assist with health checks, escort people to the canteen area, and to serve food.

This event will be located in the Kansas room, which is same room that we used for inductions.

D.New Member Orientation- Ashley Kim
October 1-2nd 6-7 PM
1.On Oct. 1st the orientation will be held at BOE in the purple room.
2.On Oct. 2nd it will be held in BOA in the SGA room.
Members please attend this event if you can. A signup sheet was passed around for those who might be able to attend and help with the orientation.
A draft agenda sheet was included in our packets at the start of the meeting.

E.New Member Induction- Ashley Kim
October 19th 12-4 PM (The event will actually be from 2-3 PM. The remaining time accounts for setting up, cleaning up, as well as other preparations for the induction.)
Help is needed to setup, cleanup, and run the event.
1.A signup sheet was passed around for people to signup to help for any amount of time between 12-4 PM.

V.Open Q/A

A clarification was made on what exactly BoA and BoE stands for.
BoA stands for Butler of Andover.
BoE stands for Butler of Eldorado.
There was also a clarification made on the book club. It was mentioned that you must either purchase the book yourself, or check it out from a library.

VI.Final Advisor Remarks

A slideshow on scholarship programs was shown.

VII.The meeting was adjourned at 6:57 PM after Sarah Kirkwood seconded the motion.
